Day Trip Question
« on: Mar 17, 2010, 08:57 »
Hey guys I'm wanting to plan a day trip to a park I haven't been to with a couple of friends and I was wanting some Coaster Community advice! I was either wanting to go to Adventureland or Frontier City. I was just wanting to hear some of your opinions on the parks if you've been to just one, or even better both. Haven't heard much about either one just wanting to figure out what park I'd be more impressed with. Thanks

You'd be more impressed with Adventureland.

Frontier City is rather small and unless you are into old Arrow shuttle loopers, Vekoma kiddie inverteds and and old Schwarzkopf Looper, there is not going to be much there that will impress you.  Is it worth a stop if you're in the area? Does a 10 lb bag of flour make a really big biscuit?

Ya I am interested in riding the Arrow Looper and the Schwarzkopf Looper... And I think it would be "cool" to ride Wildcat although I'm sure it's not much. Other than that it just kind of looks like it has a Shoot-em-up dark ride and that's about it. As far as Adventureland goes, none of the coasters really jump out except for Outlaw (kind of) but it looks like a charming little park. Plus it would be two hours shorter of a drive!

CC needs a Frontier City review! :)  That being said here are the Adventureland reviews, one of which is mine: http://www.coastercommunity.com/Adventureland/

^^Adventureland just has more to do then FC... not to mention the skyride alone is worth going to that park instead... and the new free waterpark is going to be amazing

I agree with Swoosh and Bradley.  Adventureland is a lot of fun and the skyride is something I could ride all day.  They also have a huge collection of flats.

And we need a FC trip report for the archives.

I used to work at Adventureland. Bad choice. No more of that. The skyride and log chute are good, Space Shot and Sidewinder are excellent. Splash Over is not bad, though you do get soaked if the water is on and it can be mean to your crotch if you sit in the wrong spot. Dragon is terrible. Don't know why it still exists. Underground is a big waste of space. Tornado is okay - used to be better, don't know what happened. Outlaw is easily the best coaster in the park, but it's way too short. Don't bother with the train, it sucks a lot. They still have their Falling Star, and they run it pretty fast.

For the love of all that is holy, try the mini-donuts. They're made fresh right in front of you and omfg are they good.

Try not to die on anything. Employee training (and pay) are minimal. They don't see the danger in loose articles and they actually require that you take bags and things with you. It's amazing that this hasn't come back to bite them yet. Some day... I've complained about that enough on here, though. It's a nice little park with some pretty good rides. They desperately need a new coaster, but what can you do? Everybody seems to be surprised that Iowa has a place like that. And Des Moines is a super easy drive (and a really nice city, if I do say so myself).

As for Frontier City, I've only ever driven past it in the winter, so I can't really help you there. :(

^the new waterpark will do wonders for the park this coming summer.

Tornado is just fine.  The retracked it here recently and it is extremely smooth

What's so cool about the sky ride? I've never really heard people talk up a sky ride before!

I think part of it is that there are very few of them left anymore.  I always get a little nostalgic when I walk by the old building at Magic Kingdom in Frontierland that was one of the two queues.  I also remember riding the one are WOF.  It's just a neat experience that you don't see very often anymore people of the low RPH and high maintenance.  I haven't been to a park that still had one where it didn't break down at least once during my visit.

I actually worked the sky ride for a week. It's very open, it's not too high or too long, it has good views, and it gets you off your feet for a couple minutes. Mostly, it's just a very simple ride that everyone can go on and there aren't that many left (sort of like Falling Star). It was a fun ride to work, too.

The fact that the skyride goes THROUGH trees.... and when I say THROUGH the trees, I mean they've cut the tree out so that it is basically a tunnel of tree on both sides and under you.  It just has to be experienced.

Falling Star and Sidewinder are both fun flats!
