Accessible Rides and Haunts @ WOF
« on: Aug 3, 2011, 12:40 »
Haven't been around these parts in quite some time. Some of you may remember I was in an accident returning from SFMM a couple years ago. Lost control of my motorcycle in AZ and the accident left me paraplegic. Well, been trying to get my life back to normal as much as possible, and that always included an annual trip to WOF during Halloweekends/Haunt. The last time we were at WOF was for the grand opening of Prowler in May 2009.

We are in the planning stages of returning to WOF for the first time since my accident sometime this Sept.-Oct. I already know there is a wheelchair accessible cabin as we always walked by it on the way to ours, so that shouldn't be an issue. My question is this. What rides are wheelchair accessible, including Haunts? I've read the "Special Needs" section and understand that employees are not permitted to help me board/de-board any rides, however will they allow the extra time it takes for me to get the assistance of my wife/friends to get on and off these rides?

Welcome back.

I'm not sure about Haunts but I can't think of many rides that you wouldn't be able to get on.

Camp would definitely be out of the question.  It's just a mulched path.
Vamp might be an issue to because of the downstairs portion.
Clown Town would be easy for you to access.
Cowboy Area - easy
A Grave Yard one - easy (as you can see I'm having a hard time remembering the names)
Asylum - pretty easy, there might be an obstacle or two
The Doll Factory - same as Asylum
Frightzone - easy

I think that's all of them.  I'd recommend calling the park and see if they have a list of ADA compliant Haunt attractions.

well, with the help of my wife and friends, stairs aren't an issue, unless of course the park simply says 'no'. As far as rides, my main concern is my back. A year ago I don't think I would even try, but after a trip to FL for STS-135, we visited KSC and I rode the Shuttle Launch Experience, and my back did just fine. So, I'm anxious to get back on Patriot and Prowler again now.

I think I'll skip Timber Wolf this time though.  rollercoaster

Employees will allow you as much time needed to load the rides. I've worked many rides in the park, and that is never an issue. Just don't take a lunch break in the middle of loading and unloading and you should be good ;)

Also when I worked in Bloodshed I remember seeing wheelchairs come through. So you should be golden there.

It would also be a good idea to stop by guest relations before you enter the park. They will present you with a special access pass that allows you to get wait times at the exit ramp of each ride. That way you don't run into any stairs. I believe every ride is wheelchair accessible, minus the rides that you have to stand up to ride like Bamboozler and Finnish Fling. Those are the only two I can think of.

I hope that helps!

I have seen wheelchairs go up the entrance of Timber Wolf before.  Someone will just need to push the turnstile out of the way.

Viking Voyager only has stair access.

As bad/rough as I remember TW being, I'm not taking any chances. My back is braced from T10 to my sacrum, and that much jostling would do considerable damage I'm sure.

The last time I road FF, I emerged green. The heavily greasy breakfast didn't help any I'm sure. Haven't rode the thing since.
